Today was a great day. I went to Vatican City where the Vatican museum is located and St. Peters Basilica, the largest in the world! A lot of Michaelangelos work is displayed there along with others. Michaelangelo was very talented and is a legend. After seeing a lot of his work I am amazed at what he was able to do. We went into the Sistine Chapel and it was gorgeous. They were able to restore all of the frescoed walls, and it looks great. The ceiling tells a story and has a lot of meaning to it. The colors were so bright and colorful because the Pope paid for all of it. Michaelangelo had a a lot of humor in his personality. He painted one wall a certain way just to spite a couple of people. It was neat to see how much emotion he did put into his work.
I got the chance to hike to the top of St. Peters, I cheated a little by paying for the elevator to take me halfway up! But even with that my heart was still beating fast when I got to the top. The stairs winded up around the dome until we got to the top. Once we got up we could see most of Rome and it was so worth it!! The mosaics in the interior of the dome were so small and I cant even imagine how much time and work it was to place all of them. To see what how big St. Peters Basilica really is was crazy. When looking down on the people from the top of the dome they looked like they were an inch tall! It is the largest basilica in the world.
After that we started our trek to the Pantheon. What should have taken 30 minutes took five hours!! We got a little lost to say the least, but we had a blast doing it! The pantheon was surrounded by building no more than 20 yards from it. That is just crazy to me. It is most likely one of my most favorite buildings I have seen so far. It looked so old but was beautiful. Inside was great, with the large dome ceiling and all of the great statues in it.
